About BJEC Day

BJEC Day is a full day of professional development offered to all teachers in the Jewish day school system. Workshops are offered in French, English and Hebrew across many disciplines and subject areas and for elementary and high school teachers.

 

This day provides an excellent opportunity for learning, exchange among colleagues and professional growth. 

About BJEC

BJEC (Bronfman Jewish Education Center) is the planning and coordinating agency for Jewish community educational needs in Montreal. 

Governed by a volunteer board and managed by a dedicated staff, BJEC is responsible for the development of Jewish identity and continuity in our community through formal and informal Jewish education experiences and lifelong learning opportunities geared to all age groups. BJEC works in close collaboration with Federation CJA and sister agencies involved in education and culture. 

BJEC's Department of Education and School Partnerships puts on a variety of events and provides a wide range of services to day schools. We offer professional development, pedagogical resources, consultants in special education and executive functions.

Ora Amar Rubinstein

Ora Amar-Rubinstein has over 40 years experience as an educator. As a teacher, she has taught students from elementary school through university. As an administrator, she has shaped the curriculums of elementary and high school Jewish Studies programs. She's worked as an educational consultant, coached Bible Contest students, and led numerous workshops for teachers. She was the first recipient of the Brenda and Samuel Gewurtz Award for Excellence in Jewish Education.

Avital Aharon

A native Israeli, Avital Aharon earned a double Bachelors degree and a Masters of Education at York University, Special Education certification through a joint York University/Board of Jewish Education program, and Principals’ Qualifications at OISE. Currently Avital is the Director of Educational Technology and a central administrator at TanenbaumCHAT, Toronto’s distinguished Jewish high school.

Valérie Arsenault

Chef du département de français de Selwyn House, une école privée pour garçons située à Montréal, Valérie a su se démarquer par son approche expérientielle à l’enseignement du français. Depuis 6 ans, elle donne des conférences plusieurs fois par année sur l’impact du mouvement en salle de classe et maintenant sur la motivation de la lecture chez les garçons. Elle participe à divers projets tels que la création de ressources pédagogiques pour « We School ».

Katherine Baker

Katherine Baker is the Physical Education and Health Consultant with the English Montreal School Board. She has been involved with of the Association of Physical Educators of Quebec for several years, currently serving as President. Katherine completed a Master’s degree in physical education at Memorial University of Newfoundland, focusing on elementary school children’s attitudes towards PE with an emphasis on girls’ participation.

Monique Bensadon

Monique partage son expertise en tant qu’enseignante des arts plastiques. Monique enseigne à l’École de formation hébraïque.

Dr. Elana Bloom

Dr. Bloom has worked as psychologist in elementary and high schools for the Lester B. Pearson School Board. In 2011, she became the coordinator of the Center of Excellence for Mental Health, a MESR mandate to build capacity in the area of mental health among school staff across the 10 English school boards in Quebec. In addition, she recently became the coordinator of the Family School and Support Treatment Team.

Tom Booth

I have spent many happy years as an elementary teacher, high school math teacher, high school math consultant and most recently as a math consultant for the alternative school system. I am a firm believer in the collection of math data, item analysis and common assessment.

Shella Chahine

Shella Chahine a enseigné à l’Académie Solomon Schechter au troisième cycle de l’élémentaire pendant plus de trente ans. Ses priorités demeurent la lecture, l’écriture, la littérature et le théâtre. Elle a publié des ouvrages de pédagogie, des stratégies de lecture, d’écriture et d’art dramatique ainsi que des pièces de théâtre, aux Éditions Mondia et de l’Envolée. Ces productions furent réalisées en solo ou en collaboration avec d’autres enseignantes.

Ilana Chernack

Ilana graduated from McGill University with a B. Ed. and a Master in Educational Psychology. After teaching for 6 years, she founded the Brain Friendly Learning Centre. Ilana has also contributed her expertise to a variety of media outlets, including CJAD and the Montreal Gazette. She continues to use her expertise in developing unique educational programs and techniques in order to enhance her students' academic and psychological growth.

Christiane Chevrette

Nathalie Constant

Nathalie Constant began her career with the Lester B. Pearson School Board in 1992. In 2000, she joined the Family and School Support and Treatment Team as an FSSTT technician working with students families who face socio-emotional challenges. In 2005, she became a behaviour consultant providing support in the areas of Socio-Emotional Learning in both the elementary and high school levels.

Magy Dimitry

Magy is a highschool science teacher at Laurenhill Academy. She teaches grades 7 and 8 in French and English. She created a science club and also organizes science fairs in the school. She has been teaching for 15 years and taught grades 10, 11 and CEGEP science. She is very creative in class and uses lots of technology.

Dr. Pierre Doyon

I have been teaching High School English since 1997, obtained my Doctorate in 2009, lectured at McGill for ten years, and gave workshops for the IBO. Besides teaching English, I teach Technology and Design, Film and Sociology. I have two sons, one of whom is still a teenager in high school.

Germain Duclos

** Conférencier pour CPEs ** Psychoéducateur et orthopédagogue. 35 ans d’expérience auprès d’enfants en difficulté dont 23 ans à l’Hôpital Sainte-Justine. Il a été chargé de cours à l’Université de Sherbrooke et de Montréal pendant de nombreuses années. Consultant en petite enfance. Formateur, conférencier et auteur de nombreux ouvrages traitant du développement de l’enfant et de l’estime de soi.

Melanie Eisen

Melanie Eisen partners with school teachers and leaders to plan and implement professional development programming that is dynamic, motivating, relevant, and honors the experience of our teachers. Melanie began her teaching career over 20 years ago as a classroom teacher in a Jewish day school in Northern VA. While teaching, Melanie was always on the lookout for meaningful PD and quickly began to provide it to others, both in her school and beyond.

Ahuva (Argalgi) Frank

Ahuva Argalgi Frank is an Instructor in the Social Sciences Department with a Masters in Teaching and Learning from McGill University and currently working at Bais Tzipporah Skver and Bais Yaakov de Rav Hirshprung. She is interested in research about different strategies for diverse learners in the inclusive classroom. More specifically, her work examines strategies for the visual learner, which makes up at least 80% of all learners.

Lynne Frappier

Josiane et Lynne de par leur passion pour les arts ont travaillé à amener l’appréciation et la création plastique au près de leurs élèves tout au long de leurs carrières. Josiane était professeur et directrice de département à SSA, Lynne, orthopédagogue à Weston, et enseignante à SSA.

Noa Friedman Reinisberg, JNF Shlicha

Noa was born in Israel and has a diverse background in many facets of education. She received her LLB in Law from Hebrew University. While in the IDF, she served as a welfare officer in the paratrooper’s combat brigade and still serves as a reserve in the special unit Eitan as a liaison to the families of missing soldiers. She also taught at-risk children and studied at Yad Vashem to become a guide for Holocaust journeys to Poland and worked for El Al Airlines. Noa moved to Canada last year.

Janna Gillis

Janna Gillis graduated from Concordia University with a Master's degree in Child Study focusing on children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. In 2006 she began working with the Family School Support and Treatment Team as a Behavioural tech within the Student Services Department of the Lester B. Pearson School board. She is currently working as a Behavioural Consultant and is a member of the Centre of Excellence for Mental Health.

Tal Grinfas-David

Tal is a Senior Curriculum Consultant at CIE. In July 2011, she became the Elementary School Principal of the Epstein School in Atlanta, GA. She earned her doctorate from Capella University in 2011 in curriculum and instruction and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Portland in 2006 with honors. From 2005 to the present, she led and conducted the pedagogy portions of the ISMI/CIE one-week Israel Education Teacher Workshops.

Josiane Herman

Josiane et Lynne de par leur passion pour les arts ont travaillé à amener l’appréciation et la création plastique au près de leurs élèves tout au long de leurs carrières. Josiane était professeur et directrice de département à SSA, Lynne, orthopédagogue à Weston, et enseignante à SSA.

Hannah Hershman & Clare Gabert

Hannah and Clare are senior teachers at St George's Elementary School of Montreal. Hannah is Coordinator of Student Support Services working with teachers and parents to ensure success for all students. Clare presently teaches Grade 5 English and Math and has also taught Grades 1, 2 & 3. Both Hannah and Clare are firm believers in responsive teaching where all students are engaged and excited about learning.

Shira Loewenstein
Theo Gossou

** CPE presenter ** Theo is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who provides service and consulting in applied behavioral analysis (ABA). He has experience in working with children with and without disabilities. He uses the principles of ABA to treat problem behaviors such as physical aggression, tantrum, self-injurious behaviors, or property destruction or language and social skills’ delays in children. Additionally, he provides behavioral training to parents, educators, and teachers.

Rabbi Shlomo Kadosh

Rabbi Shlomo Kadosh is Menahel of Yeshiva Gedola High School in Montreal. He has taught Gemara at the high school and adult levels for the past 20 years. He previously served as Menahel of Mesivta Keser Torah in Belmar NJ, and Rabbi of Sephardic Bet Midrash of Westgate in Lakewood NJ. He is a graduate of Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland, OH , with a Masters Degree in Talmudic and Theological Education.

Isabelle Montesinos Gelet

Isabelle Montésinos-Gelet est professeure titulaire au département de didactique de l’Université de Montréal depuis 1999 où elle enseigne la didactique de la lecture, de l’écriture et de la littérature jeunesse. Elle a aussi fondé en 2012 en collaboration avec Marie Dupin de Saint-André une revue numérique destinée aux enseignants et consacrée à l’enseignement au primaire à partir de la littérature: Le Pollen.

Carly Rosenzweig & Hilary Greenstone

Individually we have had experience as a clinician, a Phd, an educator, a learner, a consultant, a tutor, and a mother. Together we like to think of ourselves as educational engineers. We scavenge the literature for best practice and then remix it into something not only awesome but totally doable in the classroom. We weave creativity and passion into everything we do.

Tina Roth

** CPE presenter ** For 40 years, Tina has worked in schools, hospitals and rehabilitation centers. She took part in creating and supervising the Jewish General Hospital Day Program and the LBPSB Family and School Treatment Team. Tina joined the Jewish day schools as the Special Education Consultant to day programs through BJEC. She has worked as the Director of Student Services at both Akiva School and Hebrew Foundation School. She currently works at Solomon Schechter Academy.

Dawn Rowley

A professional development instructor for award-winning publishers of educational software, Dawn Rowley began working with ExploreLearning in 2009. She has developed math curriculum for district initiatives and understands the importance of helping teachers feel comfortable with teaching through inquiry and bringing technology preparedness to their students.

Shari Stone

Shari Stone received her Bachelor of Education degree from McGill University and was a recipient of the James McGill Scholarship Award. She has been teaching Language Arts and Mathematics throughout the grades at Solomon Schechter Academy since 1987. Shari was actively involved in the implementation of curriculum mapping and was part of the S.S. A. team that guided teachers in differentiating instruction.

Gisèle Tremblay

Gisèle Tremblay est bibliothécaire au service de la formation des usagers à la Grande Bibliothèque, à Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) depuis 2005. Ses champs de spécialisation sont : livres et revues numériques, littératie numérique, formation aux ressources en ligne et référence à distance.

Ann Zilberbrant

** CPE presenter ** Ann Zilberbrant and Claudia De Luca are both occupational therapists working with children with physical, development and behavioural challenges. They have over a decade of experience working with the pediatric population, providing intervention in various settings such as schools and daycares.

Richard Walter

Rich oversees the education and community-based work of CIE and ISMI, including developing curricula and lesson plans, and sharing strategies for teaching and their implementation. He engages the Atlanta Jewish community, congregations, and Jewish communities across the nation with Israel education initiatives.
